SOS benefit concert

There is a new group in the city called Saskatoon Overnight Shelter (SOS). Their goal is to create an emergency overnight shelter in Saskatoon with at least 20-40 beds. They are currently looking for a building in which there could be space for the shelter for this winter.

They will be holding a benefit concert at Zion Lutheran Church at 7:30pm on December 1 to raise funds for the proposed shelter.

Floral Acres is also donating proceeds to SOS so you may support their work that way too if you like.

Please help!

Provincial Election

As I'm sure everyone's heard, Saskatchewan is having a provincial election on Wednesday, November 7, 2007. I encourage you to ask the various candidates how they plan to address the housing crisis and whether or not they believe in rent control. Lip service is a start, but pressure to draw up a decisive plan and commit to it is what will actually get us somewhere. The weeks leading up to an election are the window of opportunity for social change, as all candidates and parties need the support of favourable public opinion. There are links on the side bar that can help you find which politicians to be writing letters to. This is our chance!

Work in Progress

Hey everyone. As I'm sure you noticed, this site is a work in progress. We will be upgrading soon to a real website, rather than just a blog. The address will be www(dot)homelessinsaskatoon(dot)org and we'll let you know when it's up and running. In the meantime, please feel free to use this thread or any other one to post about any topic you wish. When the .org site has been launched, there will be a proper forum where anyone can start threads instead of just commenting on other people's. Please bear with us, and please share your thoughts and opinions!

If you have any suggestions, links, information, or anything else that you would like to see posted on the site, you may either post it as a comment, or you can e-mail homeless(dot)saskatoon(AT)gmail(dot)com and we can post it for you. We want to hear what you have to say!

Is the housing crisis in Saskatoon affecting you?

Do you have a problem with the current housing situation in Saskatoon? Concerned about the enormous rent increases or how frequently they are occurring? Worried about eviction? Already couch-surfing, living in a shelter, or on the street? If you have an opinion, please share it. We can change the system if enough people speak out.
