Hey everyone. As I'm sure you noticed, this site is a work in progress. We will be upgrading soon to a real website, rather than just a blog. The address will be www(dot)homelessinsaskatoon(dot)org and we'll let you know when it's up and running. In the meantime, please feel free to use this thread or any other one to post about any topic you wish. When the .org site has been launched, there will be a proper forum where anyone can start threads instead of just commenting on other people's. Please bear with us, and please share your thoughts and opinions!
If you have any suggestions, links, information, or anything else that you would like to see posted on the site, you may either post it as a comment, or you can e-mail homeless(dot)saskatoon(AT)gmail(dot)com and we can post it for you. We want to hear what you have to say!

SUBJECT: Emergency Shelter Needed
DATE: October 11, 2007
FROM: Saskatoon Overnight Shelter (SOS)
TO: Community Organizations and Agencies
Please consider this a letter of introduction. We are Saskatoon Overnight Shelter (SOS), a new initiative of concerned citizens seeking to open a secure, emergency overnight shelter for individuals and families by the coming winter. We have started to make a public appeal to the Saskatoon community, through the media, for a building or space to house the shelter for the winter of 2007/2008. You are receiving this letter because we recognize your agency’s commitment to those whom we also hope to offer assistance. We value the work you are doing and hope that in the near future we may network with you.
The recent housing ‘boom’ in our city has created adverse effects for many people, including those using overnight shelter beds offered by current providers. SOS recognizes the stress this has placed upon the 202 overnight shelter beds presently available in Saskatoon, and we hope to provide an additional 20 to 40 beds. At the same time, the rising value of Saskatoon real estate has limited opportunities for shelter space. It is important to note the Saskatoon Housing Initiative Partnership, SHIP, has identified that an additional 100 shelter spaces for all family types (men, women, singles and especially families) are needed immediately in our city. Community forums on homelessness and housing deem emergency services as the number one priority in Saskatoon. SOS is working to meet this need in our community. SOS members include individuals with firsthand experience of eviction and homelessness in the wake of the boom, as well as those encountering homelessness issues at work, and those who are just plain concerned by the changes occurring in our community.
We thank you for the services you provide to our community and look forward to working with you in the future.
To Saskatoon Overnight Shelter:
Thank you for your dedication to the housing problems. Your work is certainly needed. If there's any way that we can help, please let us know. Please also feel free to post updates on this site and let us know how it's going.
